Is the 5D "long exposure noise reduction" function (C.Fn-02) useful? Here are my tests.
The pictures are 100% crops. They were photographed in RAW, converted with Photoshop Camera Raw default options (no sharpening) in 16 bits and finally sharpened with Photoshop USM filter using parameters 100%/1px/0.

Conclusion: "Long exposure noise reduction" doesn't make miracles, but in some cases it seems to "smoothen" the worst noise dots somewhat.
